A PERSONALIZED EDUCATION TO FIT EVERY LEARNER

Long Valley School offers a personalized classroom-based program for students in grades TK-8 at our Doyle Campus.

Engaging learning opportunities are provided by fully-credentialed teachers in classrooms kept to small class sizes.  The program is mastery-based, which means students work on required skills until they are mastered, making failure not an option. While learning strategies are innovative, there is a traditional environment of mutual respect, excellent behavior, and high expectations.

The Doyle campus of Long Valley School is a center of the community.  Traditional school events such as monthly assemblies and holiday programs are well attended.  The school's parent group welcomes all families and sponsors monthly family nights.

In education, one size does not fit all. Each student is unique and the factory model of learning is not effective. That is especially true at Long Valley and Thompson Peak, which is why the concept of Personalized Learning is our hallmark.

Personalized Learning is different from traditional classroom learning. First, teachers  assess each child to ascertain strengths and weaknesses. Then, the team of teacher, parent and student collaboratively creates a curriculum plan designed to meet each student’s personal needs. Students have many options to choose from in meeting academic goals, and can learn the way they learn best. Students can succeed with a combination of approaches: through textbooks, online materials, in-class lessons or at home.

The personalized learning program (also known as independent study) is available in Doyle, Portola, and Susanville areas.  Opportunities for distance learning (online only) exist in Lassen, Plumas, Shasta, Modoc, and Sierra Counties.
Long Valley and Thompson Peak Charter are charter schools, which means they are free to attend, just like public school, and there are no private school fees. However a charter school has much more flexibility over curriculum and individual styles of learning as compared to the traditional education model.
